Wandering Thoughts Posts

I’ve not had much to post on here recently as a lot of my spare time has been spent either fixing injuries, working out how to fit a trail marathon training plan into my weekends or actually training as I’ve entered the Trail Marathon Wales in June and I want to give myself the best chance I can. What this mean realistically is that I haven’t been fishing or ‘properly’ walking since the back end of last year but the night are getting lighter now were into British Summer Time…

It’s been a while since my latest ramble so I thought I’d better put pen to paper (all be it digital) before I forget what we’ve been up too. After our success at the Inskip half marathon we had a bit of a change and did a bit of mountain biking with my younger brother acting as guide and mentor on our first forays around the biking trails at Delamere (earlier in the year) and Llandegla more recently. We had an excellent time and I only came off a few times,…

To keep us motivated through the darker, wetter and definitely colder months we set ourselves a target race for the start of the year, the Inskip Derby Arms Half Marathon. This was to be Wendy’s longest race and the build up was going well until, at the start of December, she tripped over a grid, gashed her knee and badly sprained her wrist. After a couple of visits to A&E it was splinted and although not broken she was signed off work until just after the Christmas break (no pun intended……

I’d been wanting to test Merrell Trail Glove shoes since I’d first read and heard about the ‘barefoot’ way of running, or ‘bareform’ as Merrell call it so it was great to be given the opportunity to review a pair by nightgear.co.uk. On opening the box first impressions were wow, these things weigh nothing and they look great, I couldn’t wait to get them on and go for my first ‘barefoot’ run. Taking my queue from all the articles on the internet I had planned to go out slowly and…

It’s been just over three weeks since we returned from our first running residential with the trail running group from SRC Chorley. It still amazes me I can say or even write the words ‘trail running residential’, if you’d have mentioned that we’d have been going away for a weekends running a a year ago I’d have looked at you as if you’d gone completely bonkers but as the weekend approached we got more and more excited until we finally arrived, mid Friday afternoon, at The Bunkhouse, Clapham, which was…

Fishing has been on hold for a while, not through any specific reason, more like a combination of small things. The weather hasn’t really been up to much here in Lancashire plus we’d been putting in a bit of training running wise as a few weeks ago we went up to Clapham in Yorkshire for a couple of days running and walking. A group of us from SRC Chorley stayed in the The Old Manor House, bunkhouse boys in one set of bunks, girls in the other. It reminded me…

It was just less than a couple of weeks ago that my first year of running came to a satisfactory conclusion or if you like, my second year of running got off to a flying start. The conditions were almost perfect, slightly overcast, light breeze and no rain as we arrived at Rivington School at the foot of the Lancashire section of the Pennines, just north of Bolton. There were a few of us from the local Chorley Sweatshop Running Community (SRC), each with our own goals for the trail…

This anniversary we were once again visiting an island but not Anglesey, we were going to Scotland for the first time since our honeymoon up in Fort William 15 years ago and this was to be our first visit to Arran. We made good time up the motorways into Scotland and arrived at Ardrossan far, far to early so had a quick walk round the ferry terminal while waiting for our crossing. The crossing on the ‘MV Isle of Arran’ was uneventful which is always a bonus and it wasn’t…

Today is the anniversary (well its actually tomorrow date wise) of us starting to run, a year doesn’t seem that long ago but considering what we’ve done, the new friends we’ve made and the changes in both lifestyle and fitness for us both it has turned into one of the best decisions we’ve made. This time last year we ventured out of our front door for the first steps of our journey as the app. on Wendy’s phone gave us the first instructions of the couch to 5k programme (C25K).…

The Autumn sun greeted us as we arrived at The Lowry Outlet, Salford, for our first ‘mass participation’ run, the City of Salford 10k. We’d received our packs in the post at the start of last week and followed the directions (and timing) to the car parking which meant we arrived in plenty of time. In fact we arrived almost an hour and a half early. Neither myself or Wendy had been to Salford Quays before so we spent a lazy hour walking round the many futuristic looking buildings in…
