It seemed like an age since we last went fishing and looking back through the records we’ve not wet a line since Summer last year. That’ll teach us to take up new hobbies. I’d been looking forward to our first Anglesey break for a while as it always seems that the period between Christmas and the first May bank holiday is far, far too long. As is normal in the UK the weather forecast was a bit touch and go but we still packed nearly everything fishing related we owned…

Once more we ventured to Anglesey for 2 weeks of relaxing, seafishing and walking and although the weather wasn’t particularly kind to us we managed to catch a few fish. This holiday ended up with us catching a lot less fish but having a lot more fun doing it, let me explain… Our first sea fishing session saw us lure fishing in the Menai Straights, a technique that we’ve both just started and although we think we may have had a couple of ‘pulls’ nothing came of it except the…

Last weekend the weather looked perfect for our first 2012 attempt at catching a Smooth-hound from one of our local beaches. So with 20 prime peeler crab from Gerry’s of Morecambe (where we got some new lure rods at the same time – more on these to follow) we arrived at Anchorsholme around 7pm, grabbed the gear from the car and waded over the large gully to fish the tide two hours down and two back up again. Considering it was a Saturday night the beach was fairly busy and…

The weather these past two weeks has been worthy of biblical descriptions. Wet? I think that’s slight understatement, we’ve not wanted to go outside let alone go fishing and on the days where it’s been almost tolerable the wind has been all over the place. We did manage to get out a couple of weeks ago for another attempt at getting a Smooth Hound at Cleveleys.  The weather was perfect – flat calm and a warm muggy evening but all we managed was a small Bass and a Lesser Weever,…

After eagerly watching the weather and ordering 20 peeler crab and 20 black lug from Blackpool Angling Centre on Wednesday I woke up Saturday morning to find the wind hadn’t died down as expected and with the Westerlies blowing onto the Lancashire coastline the chances of catching a Smooth Hound sea fishing from Cleveleys, between Blackpool and Fleetwood, was slim at best. But I’d got the bait and armed with a few extras from the freezer we made our way to the beach to be greeted by a surf that…

With the gear only just cleaned from our Anglesey visit the weather looked spot on for a touch of sea fishing at Formby Point, Merseyside. The strong Westerly made for some impressive looking surf as I arrived on the beach to meet up with Kev and Chris, Kev had already had one small Bass and Chris a Flounder of 1lb 9oz so things were certainly looking hopeful. Unfortunately for me that’s all they did, look… Even with the freshly pumped Black Lugworm that Kev supplied I couldn’t manage a single…

Finally our first visit to Anglesey of 2011 came around and to say we were looking forward to it would be an understatement and then a bit. We stayed, as we nearly always do at Ty Cristion Holiday Cottages, in Bodedern, which gave us access to the entire Anglesey coastline with about 30 minutes. After the thankfully non-eventful journey down, unpacking more gear than would supply an Amazonian expedition and a trip to the local supermarket to stock up on food and beer we decided on an easy venue for…

With the wind in the West we decided on a late night sea fishing session up at Rossall near Fleetwood last Saturday to see if any Bass were out playing in the surf. On arrival and after a fly by from the Red Arrows along the promenade we had a quick look at the state of the sea and although it looked a bit rough it seemed fishable enough so we quickly set up the gear and launched some black lugworm baits just behind the surf. Initially this seemed to…

The wind continued to blow and showers were forecast so we elected to try somewhere with a bit of shelter. We’d been for a walk around the coastal park at Penrhos and had seem someone fishing north of the car park, just where the clay cliffs start so we parked up, donned waders and waterproofs and got going. Weed was a bit of a problem initially as the tide ebbed from right to left and the wind blew the same direction, but once the tide turned everything became a little…

We set off on our Bank Holiday journey just before noon last Friday and after stopping off at Colwyn Bay promenade for some lunch called in to Anglesey Tackle Centre to have a quick chat with Gareth and pick up bait for the long weekend ahead. Needless to say after wishing for good weather it had turned a bit blustery but we were fairly sure we’d find somewhere to fish. Our first stop was to have a go at Broad Beach, we’d been told it would be too windy to…
