I’d been looking forward to this run for a while as even though it’s ‘only’ a training run its one we did last year so the route was known and it runs through and around Newborough Forest as well as onto Llanddwyn Island, two of my favourite places on Anglesey. Unlike last year we elected to avoid the field where we encountered cows with calves so after after a little warmup to get onto the marked coastal path we headed southeast along the Menai Straights with me keeping an eye…

Getting well into the swing of relaxing (it doesn’t take much on Anglesey) after a late start we had a gentle cycle up to a local café to check out the cakes, we were on holiday after all, which turned into a circular ride of about 18km (11miles). The afternoon was spent reading and drinking tea as the forecast was rain but as it never showed up, after dinner we went for a walk on the northern side of Aberffraw for a look at the headland and options for fishing in the…

Almost a year ago we ran one of our longest trail runs, “The Newborough Forest 2011 Commonwealth Trail“, so after fueling with porridge we made our way (the whole 10 minutes) to the main car park to have another go at it. Last year the heat was almost unbearable so we were relieved to see a few clouds when we arrived but these soon dispersed and I was relieved I’d put on some sunscreen. The car park was fairly empty so we knew the forest would be peaceful and after…

A couple of weeks ago we ventured to Anglesey for our annual start of May bank holiday break. Every year it seems to take ages to get to the start of May but it certainly feels great once you realise the time is here. We took even more gear than usual as this year we had a couple of mountain bikes with us. We managed to get them in the car but only because this is a relatively short break, for anything any longer we’re going to have to ‘carry’…

So it’s just under a month until my first marathon, “Trail Marathon Wales” at Coed-y-Brenin, Snowdonia and I’m starting to get excited and admittedly a little anxious as well. Will my training have been OK? Have my previous injuries fully healed? Have I planned and practiced my fuelling strategy well enough? These and a thousand other questions will no doubt enter and leave my head in the coming month but as each one has surfaced, so far I can confidently say, Yes. I am as ready as I want to…

The weather seemed to be staying fine, or more accurately, hot, so we packed a rucksack with a picnic, swimming costumes and beach towels and made our way to the one of the car parks situated at the edge of the Newborough Warren dunes. We’ve walked this area before but it still seems like the skies are bigger, the air somehow cleaner, the colours sharper than anywhere else I’ve been. We took our time wandering through the scrub and dunes. Not only because we were looking at the huge variety…

It’s been a while since I rambled on about anything on here as I’m fairly sure everyone else in the country is as bored of the crappy weather as I am and let’s face it, the BBC and TV in general can do much better coverage than I can but… I’m British damn it and I will not let a little bit of weather stop me. I will go running, fishing, have a BBQ or whatever even if I get hypothermia while doing it, Mother Nature be damned! So, quick…

Sometimes it’s worth while just looking a bit more closely at the things you are about to stand on. Walking round Newborough Forest on Anglesey we came across all sorts of fungi, we’ve no idea what any of it was so didn’t pick any and just took a few snaps where we could. There were a lot of rotting tree stumps, mostly old pines, with a variety of lichens, mosses and fungi feeding on the slowly decaying wood. This one looks almost like a tiny version of a ‘lost world’…

After a cuppa and picking up some different gear we quickly drove down to Newborough to catch the last hour of the flood and a couple of hours down again. As we arrived a couple of people were leaving which didn’t look to good but on arrival we spotted a few people fishing into the surf but they seemed to be having a lot of problems with weed – here we go again I thought! The venue changes dramatically during darkness and i was glad that we’d had an explore…
