Testing our Willpower while Fly Fishing at Mere Beck

Rainbow Trout from Mere Beck Fly Fishery

Sorry about the lack of post recently but what with the weather and various bits of reel life getting in the way we’ve not been able to get out and about as much as we’d like.

The main reason recently though is that we’re both giving up smoking – I’ve smoked for over 20 years now and I’ve finally had enough, smoked my last 11 days ago and honestly… haven’t missed it as much as i thought I would.

The big test was last weekend though, we’ve been avoiding ‘trigger’ situations, ie, situations where ‘having a quick ciggy’ is normal. One of our main ones as anglers is between casts while waiting for a bite, of which sea fishing in crap weather is the worst so we’ve avoided that (i am going this coming weekend though – fingers crossed) but we did get out fly fishing last Sunday to our local patch, Mere Beck. Fly fishing is fairly active so we hoped we’d be OK.

It’s been a while since it was stocked so we knew it would be hard fishing and although we managed to get a few ‘tugs’ on our home tied flies the only fish that came out for us was lively Rainbow Trout of about a pound and a half, tempted by a black and green buzzer.

But the main thing was – we didn’t cave in – we got through a fishing session without even mentioning cigarettes, enjoyed ourselves and came away full of confidence that we can beat this stupid addiction.
